Erling Haaland, Borussia Dortmund’s next superstar

As the January transfer window fast approaches, there is one young striker whose move has been highly anticipated across all of Europe. Young Norwegian attacker Erling Braut Haaland was the name on everyone’s transfer list as the window got closer however it was German giants Borussia Dortmund who acquired the signature of the forward for a nominal fee of €22.5 million. Haaland has signed for Dortmund after talks broke down with Manchester United over personal terms and will officially join the team in 4th place in the Bundesliga on the 3rd of January.

The striker will sign for Dortmund from his current Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg, a club who he has shone for throughout the year, both in domestic and European competitions. Haaland first caught the eye of major European clubs after his performances in the champions league, the Norwegian announced himself on the biggest footballing stage with a phenomenal hat-trick on his champions league debut against Belgian side Genk, showing just how lethal the star is in front of goal. The 19 year old went on to score 4 more goals in the group stage, becoming the highest scoring teenager in a champions league season after only 6 games, surpassing superstar Kylian Mbappe’s record set in 2016/17 when he netted 6 goals throughout the competition for PSG. With Dortmund through to the knockout stages facing PSG in the last 16, Haaland looks set to extend his incredible record even further and could be the extra push Dortmund need to carry them through to the next round.

As for domestic competitions, Haaland has been in prolific form this season as he departs the Austrian league as second top goal-scorer, having scored 16 goals in just 14 games, an unbelievable record which means that with 28 goals in 22 appearances this season he is In scintillating form and appears to be more than ready for the second half of the Bundesliga season ahead.

The striker will join a Dortmund side that has dipped in form as of late, with 10 points out of a possible 15 from their last 5 games, they are struggling to keep up with leaders RB Leipzig who sit top of the table 7 points ahead of the yellows. The team has experienced heavy losses through injuries this season including last season’s top league goal-scorer for the club Paco Alcacer who scored 18 goals in 12 starts for Dortmund. Alcacer has struggled with injuries throughout the season, missing 7 games so far for Dortmund, this is another reason that Haaland will be such an important signing for manager Lucien Favre as the squad will have much more depth going into the latter part of the season, meaning that players such as Alcacer don’t have to rush their rehabilitation process.

Although Alcacer is injured, Haaland will not have to worry about support up front as Dortmund have no lack of prolific attackers in their team such as Jadon Sancho, Thorgan Hazard and Marco Reus, as the trio have led the team with 41 league goal contributions between them this season, a statistic that has only been matched by rivals Bayern Munich. Haaland will look to slot into the central forward role playing alongside Hazard and Sancho who will provide support from the wings with Marco Reus commanding the midfield forming a formidable attack that any defence in the league would be fearful of.

So, as the window opens in just a couple of days, Dortmund already appear to have signed one of the best deals we will see throughout the winter period as 6”4 striker Erling Haaland completes his move to the German club hoping to continue his fantastic record from Austria and bring it into Germany.
